Annual Conference

2009 Annual Conference
Belfast, Northern Ireland
July 29-August 1, 2009
This year, Sister Cities International hosted its first Annual Conference outside the United States in Belfast, Northern Ireland. This year's theme, "Building Enduring Peace after Conflict" was the focus of our three-day conference, which explored how municipalities and communities can work together in matters of conflict resolution through community and cultural diplomacy. There were also well-attended sessions on economic development, youth, and cultural diplomacy.
This year's Youth Conference brought together 150 young citizen diplomats from 15 counties to share in six days of education and fun. Delegate participants attended workshops that focused on defining conflict and its causes. They also had the opportunity to look at how they personally approach and deal with conflict. At the week's end they participated in a multi-country conflict simulation where represented different countries and worked together to draft a potential resolution to a crisis situation.
