2007 Fort Lauderdale Youth Conference
The arts are a wonderful and accessible way to begin to understand and appreciate another culture. Arts exchanges are a hallmark of the sister city movement, and at the 2007 Sister Cities International youth conference, Connecting Cultures: Building Peace through the Arts, American and International youth spent four days bridging cultural differences through art, music, food, and dance.
The 2007 youth conference took place in Fort Lauderdale, Florida at the Bahia Mar Hotel and the Broward County Convention Center. It provided students an opportunity to learn from each other through activities like belly dancing and Hawaiian dancing, African story telling, mask making, and Indian drumming. Participants also viewed International films, attended a Best Practices Showcase at the annual conference, and brainstormed how to jumpstart their organization's youth programs.
In Fort Lauderdale, youth delegates:
- Met young people from around the world
- Enjoyed art forms from around the world in interactive workshops
- Learned about other cultures through their art
- Presented their own community's culture to fellow youth delegates
- Relaxed on Fort Lauderdale's gorgeous beaches
- Buillt leadership skills for an increasingly connected world
- Spent some time with the adult delegates
