Lou Wozar Annual Awards Ceremony Sister Cities International recognized winners of the 2005 Annual Awards Program during the Lou Wozar Annual Awards Ceremony. Communities won awards for innovative programs in several theme areas and awards for best overall programs. Celebrate the contributions that sister cities have made to world peace and international cooperation and understand the important historical roots of the sister city movement. Learn more about the impact that citizen diplomacy has had on major international events and the importance of international engagement by citizen diplomats living and working in their communities.
Presenters: Visioning: Addressing Global Challenges through Local Solutions in the 21st Century A focus on understanding the global challenges that impact our societies, fostering an international perspective within our communities, defining our shrinking globe and understanding why communities must be internationally engaged.
Presenters: Implementing: Connecting Your Community to the 50th Anniversary Celebration Participate in a community Summit for Citizen Diplomscy with citizens from the Spokane area and learn about the community summit themes, process, and outcomes. You will leave knowing how a community summit works and how to advocate for the recommendations you develop at your summit. Presenters: Track 2: Your Sister City is an Economic Development Tool
Discuss how city officials can incorporate their existing sister cities into their local economic development strategy, the benefits of integrating a community's sister cities into their local economic development strategy, and how to build partnerships to promote economic development through sister cities.
Presenters: Trade: Making Those All-Important Economic Connections Learn about trade missions, including how to partner with multiple resources for a successful mission, how to put it together and the benefits to both sides.
Presenters: Economic Development Assessment Tool This highly interactive session will feature an economic development assessment tool that will focus on local government issues and how to build an international economic development framework. Attendees will also learn how to develop a strategic approach to using sister cities as an economic development tool.
Track 3: Governing in the Global Village
What happens when local government changes? Presenters will discuss how sister cities support and survive the transition in local government leadership and structure and how long-range planning can help sister cities programs survive local government changes.
Presenters: The Ultimate Partnership - Government Leadership and Citizen Empowerment Presenters will discuss why sister city programs cannot overlook the importance of local government involvement and why local government cannot overlook the importance of citizen diplomats. Useful tips on how the two can work together will be offered.
Presenters: Cultural Sensitivity - How to Close the Deal A highly interactive and energetic introduction of some common protocol issues will be discussed along with issues related to project management. Participants will break into roundtables, review case studies, and participate in simulations related to geographic regions.
Track 4: Youth: The Global Village in 2020
U.S. and International students will share how their involvement with sister cities has changed their outlook on the world, what they learned, and what hopes they have for this world following their sister cities experiences.
Presenters: Youth Exchanges in the 21st Century This high level look at the future of exchanges will show the powerful role technology can play in sister city youth programs and exchanges.
Presenters: It Takes a Village to Raise a Global Citizen Join us in the effort of raising tomorrow's citizen diplomats. Discover ways that sister cities programs can meet challenges, and learn about available partner resources in the global village.
