Make a Difference for Earth Day 2010!
April 22, 2010 marks the 40th anniversary of Earth Day. To commemorate this event, Sister Cities International has partnered with the Earth Day Network to encourage U.S. sister city programs to raise awareness in their communities about the environment by participating in Earth Day 2010.
The Earth Day Network has created three main Earth Day 2010 activities. Sister Cities International encourages your community to participate in any one of the following:
- Global Day of Conversation
This is a coordinated opportunity for local elected officials to engage their constituents in constructive dialogues about the urgent environmental issues facing their communities. Topics include: energy efficiency, conservation, transportation, economic opportunity through green jobs and clean industry. This Global Day of Conversation will illustrate the commitment of millions to make the natural environment a priority for 2010 and beyond. Contact Eric Harris, Earth Day 2010 political outreach director, at (202) 518-0044 ext. 24 or Harris@EarthDay.net if your community would like to participate.
- Environmental Proclamations
Communities may engage their local government in a pledge (binding or non-binding), indicating that they place importance on environmental and/or environmental education initiatives. Please see the template proclamations that highlight the importance of environmental protection and preservation within your community.
- Environmental Education
Educate the youth in your community about living in a sustainable environment through the Earth Day 2010 global curriculum. This program chronicles the history of the modern environmental movement. Also, join forces with youth around the world as they provide community service during Global Youth Service Day.
Make a difference this Earth Day by registering your individual act of "green," community service or town hall meeting at www.earthday.org, and indicate your affiliation with Sister Cities International. These "green acts" will not only inform people around the world about your contribution to Earth Day 2010, but will help in the global effort to fight climate change.
Sister Cities International and Earth Day Network aim to help you-and your community make the world a better place for future generations. Big and small, every step towards a greener future counts. Make your "green act" known-sign up for a Global Day of Conversation, Earth Day proclamation or Earth Day 2010 Curriculum today.
