FOR TEACHERS
Guidelines and Information about the Young Authors Showcase

What is Sister Cities International?

Sister Cities International is a nonprofit citizen diplomacy network that creates and strengthens partnerships between U.S. and international communities. We strive to build global cooperation at the municipal level, promote cultural understanding and stimulate economic development.

Sister Cities International is a leader for local community development and volunteer action. We motivate and empower private citizens, municipal officials and business leaders to conduct long-term sister city programs. We believe that sister city programs involve two-way communication and should mutually benefit partnering communities.

What is this year's theme?

The 2010 theme Your World… is an opportunity for young artists and authors to answer the question, "What makes you, you?" International travel and cultural exchanges can impact lives in many different ways. Young artists and authors are asked to show how cultures and experiences have impacted their ideas and perspectives of the world.

Eligibility and Media

  • Each participating student author must be between 13 and 18 years of age at the time entries are due April 30, 2009.
  • Each participant is allowed to submit only one entry.
  • This contest is open to students from all countries. Member communities are allowed to submit entries from multiple participants.
  • All work must be original and inspired by the theme. Entries may not be plagiarized, stolen, or copied from any other source and must not defame or invade the rights of any person, living or dead. Entries not adhering to these guidelines will not be considered.
  • Each entry must be sent with a completed official entry form and the entry fee.
  • Click Writing Recommendations for the Young Authors Showcase to find a one-page handout that complements that guidelines and entry form.

How are the winners selected?

A panel of judges will evaluate entries on the basis of theme interpretation, composition, scholarship and originality. The use of commonplace symbols of unity, diversity, and globalization can be used but only to complement the personal testimony of the artist or author. During the judging, author names are kept confidential.

How do I help my students submit their work?

Please forward your student's submission on to your local sister city program. If you do not know who that is, please contact Jennelle Root, Special Programs Manager, Sister Cities International at 202-347-8630 ext. 4003 to receive the contact information. Each city is encouraged to enter one piece of artwork from a local artist and from each of their sister cities. All entries must be received by Sister Cities International by no later than Friday, April 30, 2010.
