Sister Cities International hosted its first 5k Race for World Peace in Washington, DC’s Foggy Bottom neighborhood on Saturday, October 24. The race attracted runners from 17 countries including Ethiopia, Russia, and China.

Over 500 runners and walkers registered for the event with over 80 participants making this event their first competitive experience. Demesse Tefera and Hirut Mandefro, the top male and female runners respectively, each took home a $1,000 prize.

Races for World Peace also took place simultaneously in sister cities around the world including: Ft. Worth, TX; Palatine, IL, Fontenay-le-Comte, France; and Cluj Napoca, Romania.

Following the Race, the World Cultures Festival provided performances by artists from Bolivia, Ukraine, and India just to name a few. Minister Guangyuan Lui, Embassy of the People’s Republic of China; Hope Wiseman, Ms. Teen District of Columbia; and Tiffany Cole, Ms. Maryland Globe shared with attendees their support of Sister Cities International. Celebrity blogger Pamela Sorensen of Pamela’s Punch served at the event’s Mistress of Ceremonies.
