How to Organize a Sister Cities September Concert
All September Concerts are expected to adhere to our three basic principles:
Freedom: All venues, musicians, and organizers are free to design and organize their own concerts;
Equality: All music and all musicians are treated equally, regardless of genre or background;
Accessibility: All music is offered free of charge.
To begin your September Concert plan:
1. You Will Need
Musicians
Venue
Volunteers
Master of Ceremonies, or Emcee (volunteer or a performer)
Sound equipment, if needed
Banner
public relations materials
2. Receive Assistance
If you know of an organization or venue that regularly has musical performances enlist them to create a free concert for your community on September 11th. Or approach community groups, schools, libraries, city government, etc. to see if they will sponsor and/or participate.
Places to begin include:
Mayor's office
Arts Commission or Arts Council (or similar name)
Music schools
Universities
Performing arts groups (orchestras, youth orchestras, choral groups)
Churches
Public Libraries
These groups can assist you by providing a space and/or sound equipment, promotional support, musician contacts, financial help, and volunteers.
3. Determine Time/Duration of Your Concert
Think of your venue and the most appropriate time of day to attract an audience. If it's an outdoor space (e.g., City Hall plaza or a park), a lunch-time concert would attract more audience than a late day/evening performance. Schools or libraries might prefer a mid-afternoon concert. An evening concert might be more appropriate at a church or religious organization.
4. Register
Make sure to register your city on the September Concert website, www.septemberconcert.org, so that your event is officially recognized.
5. Provide Details
Provide program and contact information to Sister Cities International. Please send photos and information after the event. Send your information to Jim Doumas, Sister Cities International. 1301 Pennsylvania Avenue NW Suite 850, Washington, DC 20004, phone 202.347.8630 ext. 8632, jdoumas@sister-cities.org.
6. Promote Your Concerts!
Templates for flyers and handouts will be available on the Sister Cities International website at www.sister-cities.org.
Background
In 2006, 225 individual concerts were held and close to 50 sister cities participated. September 11th, 2006 marked the fifth anniversary of the September 11th attacks on the United States, and was also the 50th anniversary of Sister Cities International. The sister city movement in the United States emerged from a White House Summit on Citizen Diplomacy held September 11-12, 1956, where President Eisennhower called on Americans to practice people to people diplomacy in the name of peace. This event is an unprecedented opportunity to spread a message of hope through music.
