How does the Network for Sustainable Development operate?
Communities interested in participating in the Network for Sustainable Development must meet the following requirements:
- Participating communities must be a member of Sister Cities International.
- Each sister cities partnership is required to enter its community information into Sister Cities International's on-line database.
Additionally, each participating community must:
- Designate a local network facilitator, who will be responsible for communicating with both his/her sister city partner and with Sister Cities International, and serve as the official representative to the Network for Sustainable Development.
- Commit to continuously reviewing the information about sustainable development action at the community level available through the Sister Cities International Web site.
Each participating sister city partnership should also consider creating, either within their local government structure or within their sister city organizational structure, a Sustainable Development Task Force that will assist the communities involved in promoting sustainable development concepts.
Each sister city partnership will be eligible for Sustainable Development Seed Grants and other grant opportunities, as they become available. All opportunities for funding will be posted on the Sister Cities International Web site and will be based on a competitive selection process. Each member community will be responsible for raising matching funds (cash and in-kind) equal to the total amount of the "seed grant."
Sister Cities International is dedicated to fulfilling the following commitments:
- Providing a comprehensive section on the Web site for communications, knowledge-based services, and resources, to ensure the achievement of local community goals.
- Obtaining significant funding resources that will be made available through Sustainable Development Seed Grants.
- Establishing formal partnerships with donors and other associations/organizations committed to the goals of the Network.
- Building and sustaining local institutional capacity to undertake sustainable community development and to achieve the broadest possible dissemination of results and best practices.
