Tsunami Relief Effort

Are you interested in doing something more than just donating? Well, formalized sister city ties can take several months to establish and the situation in the tsunami-struck region is chaotic. But Sister Cities International has developed a special designation called "Partners for Humanitarian Assistance" that can be utilized to quickly start humanitarian assistance projects in situations like this. If your community is interested in forming a partnership with a community affected by the tsunamis consider looking to the links in the box to the right for a list of sister city partnerships in the region that were hit directly by the tsunamis. In addition, you can find communities with relationships in the U.S. that are in affected countries, but were not directly affected.

Many of our members are just like you - seeking to do more, but not knowing where to start. Visit our links to communities around the U.S. that are already engaged in recovery projects and get helpful hints on how to structure a productive humanitarian program. Communities like Charlotte, North Carolina, Denver, Colorado and Virginia Beach, Virginia are just a few of the many sister city members that are responding to the crisis. For a full listing of projects look to the box to the right.

If you don't have time for a full project consider donating to one of the larger aid organizations. There are a number that are accepting donations on behalf of the victims of the diaster. For a well-rounded, extensive list of organizations with ongoign donations programs, see the USAID list in the box to the right.
