Make a Difference in Healthcare, Donate Books to Medical Students in India
Galveston-Trivandrum Sister City Society seeks to help nursing and medical students through www.SupportSisterCities.org

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE      December 7, 2006

GALVESTON, TEXAS - Every student needs books to study and master, especially medical and nursing students. But what if tomorrow's doctors don't have the books and journals they need?

In Trivandrum, India more than 200 medical and nursing students need books and journals to continue their studies.

"We want more students educated in professional studies so that they will help others, ensuring a strong workforce of nurses and doctors so desperately needed in India," said Rajan Koshy, chairperson of the Galveston-Trivandrum Sister City Society. He noted that there is a pressing need for qualified medical personnel in India, and that while there is a stockpile of intellectual capital within India's healthcare community, the cost of medical and nursing textbooks, even used, is prohibitively expensive for students in Trivandrum.

The Galveston Sister City Society is raising $50,000 to buy new textbooks and journal subscriptions. The Buy Books for Medical Students in India Project aims to provide 150 new text books for nursing students, 150 new text books for medical students, shipping costs, and subscriptions to medical and nursing journals. In addition, the project will collect books from nursing schools and universities to be donated to the students.

All books donated to the students will be given to the school library after they are used, and will be available for the next class of students.
